What is the Robotic System

What was a promise in 2011, the Robotic System became a reality in 2013 and is already successful in the US, Asia and now just come to Brazil firsthand the Clinic / Day Hospital Dr. João Carlos Pereira, an expert on hair restoration. We begin a new era in hair transplant surgery in our country.

Definitely, with the robotic, hair transplant surgery was joined excellence with robotics technology, which is already indispensable in some areas of medicine. During the last decade, the robotic procedures have advanced in many precision operations, to aid surgeons in surgery difficult and repetitive movements, reducing manual variability.

The Robotic System is a computer-assisted surgical system, controlled by the doctor who acts in the first half of Hair Restoration Surgery: the stage of harvesting follicular units. In the second phase, which is the drilling of the scalp to insertion of the grafts and in the third stage, which is the placement of grafts which the holes were opened in the second phase remains manually performed with instruments themselves to the skilled surgeon. Experience is essential, skill and science of training to determine the results expected by the patient efficiently and aesthetically natural and avoid the many complications that can occur with hair transplant surgery.
In the US alone, 50 million men suffer from hereditary baldness. In the world are 310 thousand hair transplants performed every year in individuals 18 to 80 years, though most are done in patients between 20 and 40 years of age.

In recent years, techniques have evolved and capillary surgery is becoming less invasive. The traditional FUT technique (Follicular Unit Transplantation), where a scalp segment is removed with cutting medium for harvest of the hair follicles, is used less and less due to the need of removing points and the undesired linear scar which leaves the posterior areas and sides of the head, besides the postoperative discomfort.

In mid-2010, Dr. João Carlos Pereira began in Brazil a new technique called FUE (Follicular Unit extration), where follicular units started being harvested by an American microaparelho.

The main advantage of this minimally invasive technique compared to FUT is the fact that the FUE follicular units are harvested one by one directly from the scalp without leaving visible scars, its realization has been growing 39% per year.

With the arrival of Robotic System, there is a major achievement of the FUE technique. What was done with the microaparelho manually now be carried out by Robotic System, controlled by a robotic technology and digital imaging. The advantages are in efficiency, speed and accuracy in extraction of follicular grafts, while minimizing damage to the follicles and time of surgery. Since the disadvantage in using Robotic System in hair transplant is the cost of the robot system, which is higher than the previous techniques, depending on the technology employed.

After extraction of the hair follicles by the robot, they undergo inspection microscope and prepare to be transplanted in the bald areas. The procedure can be performed under sedation and local anesthesia or only under local anesthesia, but in this case the operation becomes tiresome for the patient, because it takes usually 6 to 8 hours, and is held in a hospital operating room, for added security and comfort. The postoperative period is comfortable without pain and bruising (purple). A discrete facial swelling may occur in the days following the surgery. Patients can return to normal activities after 48 hours. Physical activity and individual sports are released after five days. The implanted hair hatch after 90 days and grow 1 cm per month. With eight months, individuals begin to notice the end result of the surgery.

For those who still have doubts about the techniques used, or what would be the best solution for your case, the first step is to schedule a consultation with Dr. John Carlos, so he can evaluate and suggest the best surgical option.
